A Town Talk With Wade

John 12:21 (NASB)

these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

Jerusalem has been a city for over 5,000 years. For much of that time it has been one of the leading cities of the world, a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural center. It is a holy city for Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. In Jesus’ day, the Jews entered Jerusalem for major festivals, and just like Washington, D.C. on the 4th of July, foreigners would come to the city to observe the celebration. In our text, we have a group of Greeks who approach Philip with a request: “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” I’d like to ask the question:

Why?

Think about it: why do people want to see Jesus? Feel the weight of the question. Or, let’s put it in terms that relate to who we are and where we are today: Why would the people of Enid want to see Jesus? If we follow John’s gospel from 1-11, there are seven things Jesus does that would have sparked curiosity.

  1. At a wedding, Jesus changes water into really good wine.

  2. And we watch as Jesus disturbs the oppressive system of exchange in the Temple courts.
    TownTalk2
  3. Jesus associates with Samaritan women, outsiders, lowlifes.
    TownTalk3
  4. He crosses the boundary between friend and enemy when he heals the son of a powerful Roman official, a figurehead of foreign occupation, of oppression.
    TownTalk4
  5. He heals a crippled man at the pools of Bethesda.
    TownTalk5
  6. And he feeds the multitudes with 5 loaves and 2 fish.
    TownTalk6
  7. And, probably the most incredible event of all, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead!
    TownTalk7
“For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard (about Lazarus)” (v.18).

The greatest reason people will want to meet Jesus is that they’ve seen dead people awakened! Jesus is doing some amazing things in lives of people here in Enid. Jesus is awakening His people.
