Marks of Discontentment

Philippians 4:1-11 (KJV)

Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are hones, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

  1. ENVY: An inability to be happy for the success, promotion, and fortune of other persons.

"Where the sin of envy is predominant, a man can have no true contentment" (Dr. John Gill).

"Envy is the rottenness of the bones." Prov. 14:30

"For wrath killeth the foolish men, and envy slayeth the silly one." Job 5:2

  2. COVETOUSNESS- An unwarranted, ungodly, and immoderate desire to have more possessions.

"A covetous man is like the small creature with no passage through. It takes in all it can but lets out nothing. The covetous man and his small creature break and burst with their own fullness" (Dr. John Gill).

"Let your conversation be without covetousness and be content with such thing as ye have." Hebrews 8:5
  3. PRIDEFUL AMBITION: A desire to bow to none, but rather be above all.

It is reported that when Alexander thought he had conquered the whole world, he sat down and cried because there was not another world to conquer. Jesus said, "Take no thought for your life" because God will take care of his people. (Matthew 6:25)

  4. COMPLAINING: Murmuring about one's circumstances, troubles, or afflicitons is the reverse of contentment.

The Apostle Paul said: "In everything give thanks." We are told, "Neither murmur ye," and "Wherefore doth a living man complain?" (Lamentations 3:39).

  5. ANGER: An emotional response of rage directed toward those who do not meet one's expectations.

"The worst of slaves is he whom anger rules" (Phillips Brooks). "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice" (Ephesians 4:31).
