The Name Above Every Name

Philippians 2:6-11 (KJV)

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and too upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Last week we saw how a Christian is to relate to others in humility. By God's grace we have the ability to consider every one else better than we, and we can look out for the needs of others. This is opposite of one without Christ, who by nature is selfish and egotistical. After telling us how Christians are to be, Paul gives us the example of the humility of Jesus in a very moving and powerful text. For anyone who would argue against living a humble life, consider what is said:

  1. The Only Objection to Humble Living... "Let this mind be in you... (he) thought it not robbery."
Some might say, "I ain't ever going to let anyone get the better of me!" God says, "Look at my Son." Look at how He considered you, look at how He thought of you, look at Him!
    1. It is your relationship with Christ that is important... (v. 6)
We live in an uncertain world. No one knows the future, The N.T. does not tell us very much in exact detail of what lies ahead of us. The N.T. constantly tells us that the most important thing in life and in this world is our relationship to Jesus Christ.
      1. It is not enough to believe in God, it is Jesus Christ who is to be central.
      2. We are to worship God by worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ.
In a moment we will examine the confession "Jesus Christ is Lord." Suffice it to say that the only worship acceptable to God is that which calls Christ—God!
    2. It is the mind of Christ that you are to have within you... (v.6).
      1. Though He is equal to God, He did not hang on to His rights...
      2. He humbled Himself and became obedient to the cross...
Jesus Christ is the greatest illustration and fulfillment of what it means to live humbly.
  2. The Present Position of Jesus Christ... "Wherefore God hath highly exalted him..."
Mark it down, the person who lives humbly before men will be highly exalted by God.
    1. Exaltation follows humiliation..."Wherefore..." (v.9).
The Bible says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
    2. Exaltation exceeds humiliation... "God hath highly exalted him..." (v.9).
You will never go wrong treating people with the attitude described in this chapter. Why? Because whatever you give up in humiliation, God will exceed in exaltation.
      1. The Lord Jesus is in control of the universe... "All power is given to me" (Matt. 28:18).
      2. The Lord Jesus will be visibly triumphant... "every knee shall bow" (v. 10).
  3. The Coming Confession of Every Person... "Jesus Christ is Lord" (v. 11)
    1. Jesus—the carpenter from Nazareth, the man who walked along the Sea of Galilee and taught the people. This is the person whom we read about in the gospels.
    2. Christ—the Messiah, the "anointed One." Christ set Himself apart and was set apart by God to die as our Deliverer for the forgiveness of our sins.
    3. Is Lord—which simply means "God." "Lord" is the word so often used by God of Himself in the O.T. The Jews avoided the pronouncement of this name. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that "Jesus Christ is God."

You can tell everyone you know something about their future. There will be a day when every person will know, "Jesus is God." For some, it will be too late. Do you know Him?
