Think Story (Part II): The Tragedy of an Unobserved Life

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

In our Soul Talk series we have laid down a premise that life is all about knowing and enjoying God. Some say life is all about glorifying God. We respond that we glorify Him by knowing and enjoying Him. Life is all about Him. The soul is to be captivated by God. "The worth and excellency of a soul is measured by the object of its love" Henry Scougal.

  1. Church is the place God designed to stir up the soul to love Him.
"Let us consider how to stir up one another to love... not neglecting to meet together" (v.24).
    1. My soul stirred up to love God occurs at an appointed place.
The phrase "meet together" (KJV: assembly) is the Greek work episynagogue which is an appointed place—upon the synagogue. Epithet is "a name put upon." Let's be clear. The church is a body of believers, but those believers congregate. This gathering is often counter-cultural and non-traditional. But it is a gathering.
    2. My soul stirred up to love God occurs through appropriate planning.
"Let us consider how to stir up one another to love..." This word consider is used in Hebrews 3:1—"You who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus." Consider is a strong verb meaning "to fix the mind on." It implies attention and a continuous observation. When you plan ministry, are people drawn to God?
  2. Church is the place God designed as a thermometer for the soul's health.
"Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some" (v.25). This phrase introduces the text that describes those who shrink back from faith and are destroyed (v.39). It is obvious that a man or a woman can go to church and not be engaged with God. But this text is very clear that the soul that neglects the assembly is in trouble—not because the assembly is neglected, but because the soul has no joy in God and grace. Your worship displays faith in Christ, love for Christ, devotion to Christ, and great need of Christ. Forsaking the assembly of God's saints displays contempt for Christ. "Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of god, and profaned the blood of the covenant... and outraged the Spirit of grace?" (Hebrews 10:28- 29). Church is both the thermometer and the medicine.
  3. Church is the place God designed for the hurting soul to be healed.
"...encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (v.25). We have been discussing what it means to be a good listener and engage in Soul Talk, but allow me to give encouragement to those of you who are hurting this morning. If the story of your soul is never heard, then you are living the tragedy of an unobserved life. You are enduring the unnecessary anguish of loneliness. It is for this reason we believe small group ministries of our church are vitally important to you. When your story is told, the Spirit begins to move in you. People who love you will lead with their ears. We will listen. We will think beneath. We will think vision. We will think passion. We will ask questions. Only then, will you begin to encounter God.
